AUCKLAND TROTTING CLUB.

—- •- ■ SPRING MEETING OPENS. BEA PEARL WINS BIG RACE. MOXEYSPIDER'S GOOD SHOWING. The trotting season for the North Island wa~ ripened on Saturday at Kpsom. when the Auckland Trotting Club held the first of the two days' spring meeting. The weather was ideal, and the track, though not fast, was in good order, the winners running round about their handicap times. The big event, the Spring Handicap, provided a good finish between Sea Pearl and Kohara, both trained in Chiistehurch. although Sea Pearl, the winner. i> owned by the Auckland sportsman Mr. <■'. McMillan. The totalisator put through £53,R43. compared with £.V.i.2'.t2 tor tin- first day at the spring meeting last year, a d.-i-rease of 1544't. Favourite Unlucky. Backers made their first attack on their wallets when the whole of the 20 acceptors went out for the Waitemata Trot. The final summing up was in favour of the Galindo mare Bridget Galindo. She carried £50 more than the second choice. Miss Native. Roma Bingen was third fancy, but paying a lair price, about the same as the ultimate winner, Gold Sovereign. Backers or" the favourites fared badly, as Miss Native would not begin, while Roma Bingen broke up before going half a mile. The early leaders were Don Zolock ami Lilydale, but though well back, botli Bridget Galindo and Gold Sovereign were trotting well. Half a mile from home they made a forward move, but while Cold Sovereign got a good run on the outside Bridget Galindo was well boxed in on the fence and did not get a run till approaching the straight. She then put in a fine finishing ell'ort to get third less than a length behind the winner, Gold Sover- j eign. Tne latter is one of T. Rae's team at Avondale. Don Zoloc-k, who ran second, went his best race for a long time, and left the mark well for H. Price, who now trains him at Otahuhu. Lilydale had every chance, and went a fair race fourth, just beating Peter McDonald and Elsa Nore. The latter trotted a useful race. An Easy One. When Yenot was withdrawn from the Improvers' Handicap backers took that as the tip for R. Berry's other representative, Pear! Coronado. and she carried £250 more than Harold Thorpe. There was a big drop to Bawldy Locanda, and the others were at any old price. Profiteer played up at the start, and interfered with the chances of several of the runners, but, judging result would have been the same. He is one of B. Edwards' team at Christchurch, and was driven along never further back than fourth till three furlongs from home, when he ran up to Grattan Thorpe, then the leader. Over the last quarter Harold Thorpe had the race well won and could easily have increased his advantage of a length at the post, •lean Darling came into the picture at the end of a mile and finished really well to make a dead heat of it with Gratton Thorpe for second. Coal Light had every chance and finished fourth which was easily her best performance for a couple of seasons. Luvan and Billy Whiz were closer at the finish than at any other part of the contest while Uncle Bert was doing as well as any in the straight. The winner is a very promising pacer ami looks like the l>c*t of Our Thorpe's stock. Only Two In It. For the £1000 Spring Handicap, First Carbine was the only withdrawal and punters summed up in favour of Kohara and Sea Pearl, both from Christehurch. Kohara carried just on £350 more than Sea Pearl. Imprint had over £400 less invested on him. The issue was really confined to Sea Pearl and Kohara and they hail the remainder well beaten a long way from home. Bryce was niggling at Kohara before the straight was reached, while Berry, with Sea Pearl, was driving a confident race a couple of lengths away. When they were set for the run home, both had to be driven hard, Pea Pearl finishing best to win by half a length. Jewel was always in the first four and finished a fair third, but Goldman did not finish up well in the straight. Imprint was handy enough with a round to go, but could not go on with it and seventh was his position at the end. A Good Stayer. Backers cimi a cropper In the Onehunga Handicap for unhoppled horses. With the exception of Ben Wallace and Festive Morn, all were square-gaited trotters. Nelson Ata was a hot favourite with nearly £500 more on his chance than was entrusted to The Tiger. There was £200 less on Trampfast, the others at good prices. With a round to go Nelson Ata was bowling along so freely in front Uiat he looked like putting Ms numerous backers through, but A. Broughton, though having anything nut the host of a drive behind Golden Gate, always had his horse handy to the leader. Twice Golden Gate skipped in the la.-t ha mile, but he soon settled down again and ru. ning past Nelson Ata before entering the straight, he won easily by three lengths. Nelson Ata was very ti:*l .n the staight and finished out of a place, second mone, goin"- to My Junior, who had new been further back than third. Festive Morn was in front at the end of the first mile, but broke up badly and was never sighted again. The winner up till the end o: last season was trained at Epsom by A McSweeney, but is now in A. W Broughton'= team at Mangere. Mc Sweeney to-day drove My Junior and i was hard luck to be beaten by a horse In was training up till a Tew months ago The Tiger and Trampfast were dis tinctly disappointing and never looker like being in the money. All The Way. Those who were supporting favour ites had their wallets hit badly whei Logan Lou failed to get in the money ii the October Handicap. The fact that sh was 4S yards behind some speed; sprinters mattered not and the mone; went on'her so solidly that she ende up carrying nearly £400 more than Al hell. .1. Shaw's bracket (Ben LomoiK ami Walloon) was third selection wit £220 less. Slmw drove Walroon an< Julian, who was behind hen Lomond slipped the latter oil the mark qtlickl; and was never hearted at any part having a couple of lengths to spare a the end. Master Councillor went wit |A him for j,i* furlongs, but stopped badl.

I in the straight and was beaten out of a place. All Bell went, his usual solid race to get second well clear of Hughie . Wallace who paced evenly all the way without showing any real brilliancy. Lady Joan who was unhoppled, was last all the way. Logan Lou had made up a lot of her handicap under pressure and < was in third position just before turning ; into the straight, but she broke badly and settled what looked to be a good chance. Walroon, Oakhampton and Dreamalion never appeared to have a winning chance. Trotter Beats facers. Bingen Starr and Luvan were the only .vithdrawals from the Steward's Handicap and backers went for Yenot and Marshal Neil as though the others were not in the same paddock. Yenot was first choice, carrying over £2000, while : close on that amount was registered against Marshal Neil. Money Spider • carried just a little over half as much as the favourite. The race was a great victory for Money Spider, the only ( straight out trotter in the race. He began quickly and Bryce had him up behind the leaders, Florent and Marshal Neil, with half a mile gone. When Florent dropped out, Marshal Neil and Money Spider were the leaders all through and though Marshal Neil was first into the straight, he was well beaten at the finish by Bryce's trotter. Scandal was third, a position he occupied all the way over the last mile. Yenot threatened to be dangerous, entering the final lap, but did not display any dash when asked for an extra effort. Uncle Bert went a fair race, but the company was too good and Jewel Pointer, when making a run on the fence three furlongs from home was disappointed and Shaw had to pull him up to go round Uncle Bert and Yenot. This settled his chance. Money Spider's performance was a very fine one as he went 4.30 4-5, . which is pretty good for a trotter. Waikaha Still Coming. With such a line record—he has never • been out of place—it was not surprising that Waikaha should be a solid favourite for the Mountain Trot, and he carried £.300 more than Money .Spider, who had been penalised 12yds for his win in the previous race. Proud Ata was nearly as well backed as Money Spider, and there was fair money for The Tartar. It was an interesting race, with a great finish. Ngatira tried to win all the w-ay, but Proud Ata and Waikaha were always handy to him, and when Money Spider put in an appearance just before reaching the straight there was plenty to arouse interest. Proud Ata was the first to weaken, and then Waikaha appeared to have the race well won. However, Ngatira hung on, and Money Spider, rolling into his finishing effort, the trio went past the post almost in line, Waikaha winning by a neck. Ngatira only beat Money Spider by a head. Waikaha won without J. T. Paul hunting him right out, and he may have been able to ; increase the margin had his driyer dei sired. Charles Dixie and Proud Ata went useful races, while Peter Dean showed a glimpse of his old form, but ; did not keep up his run. The Tartar i settled his prospects at the start by ; failing to leave right, and Aerial Bingen 1 never had a chance. Tradesman broke 1 up early. Nelson Fame Unlucky. It is a long time since S. August i won a race, but he was decidedly unr lucky in not getting the Electric Handii cap with Nelson Fame, instead of being ; beaten half a length. The favourite 1 was Arran Chief, trained by M. B. I i Edwards at Canterbury, and he always ! t had the horse nicely placed in the i j running. Typist looked like winning , i at the home turn, where Grattan Thorpe ' was also in the picture. However, Arran Chief was too good in the run home, but was doing his best to beat Nelson Fame. The latter lost several t lengths at the start and then had to go I round a big field. Typist was only i beaten into third place in the straight. • Pearl Coronado was not dangerous, but 1 Jean Darling went a good race without 3 getting any money. 1 SPUING HANDICAP (HARNESS) of . lOOOsovs. Two miles. 3 2—SEA PEARL, eh m. syrs.
