MORTGAGED WEALTH.
"There Is a mortgage or 21 per cent on the realised material wealth or Australia," said Mr. C. H. Wickens, the Commonwealth Statistician, in a recent address in Melbourne. Mr. Wickens spoke on Australia's balancesheet. He said that a calculation which he now had in hand showed the total private wealth or Australia was £2,425,000,300, or £4 26 per head of population, and the property of the Federal State and local Governments was £725.000,000. This made the total wealth £3.150.000,000. Against this, £700,000,000 was due to Australia's creditors oversea.
