ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETIES.

LAKE TAUPO FISHING. DISCUSSION ON FEES. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. At the Acclimatisation Societies' Conference an interesting discussion took place upon amendments proposed to tentative remits regarding Taupo fishing. Mr. Johnson (Auckland) said that if the Government expected to get £3000 for fishing rights it would be disappointed. It would only mean increased poaching. ' The Government would be lucky if it got £600. On the other hand, all men who could pay £1 for a season license would be prepared to pay 30/ for better fishing. Under his proposal— I increased license fees, and the handing I over to the Government by the societies ;of one-third, to be devoted to the con- ' servation and propagation of fish—mdi I vidual societies would benefit and the 1 Government would get more than its ! £3000. Mr. Russell (Southland) said that, while his sympathies were with the mover, he did not think every other society should be penalised for the good of Auckland. Mr. Cook (Auckland) expressed the view that the result would be more in j favour of the South Island, as they . fished there more than in the North. I Mr. Henderson (Waimarino) said they had been told by a Maori interpreter that £3 licenses were in the Government's agreement with the natives. Mr. Whitney (Auckland): I do not think so.
