STALKING-HORSE FOR RICH ONE. A DISBELIEVING MAGISTRATE. (By Telegraph.—Special to "Star. -, ) WELLINGTON, this day. "He ■ia a very poor man -who- has allowed himself to take the place of a wealthier one, who is at present' in the South Island," said counsel at the Magistrate's Court this morning ■in pleading guilty on behalf of Ngau Jim, a Chinese (471, who was charged with keeping a common gaming house. The case against ,lim. and also against Joe Kirn (30) and Joe Long (42), who were charged with assisting, had been remanded from last week, when 20 Chinese, who had been found on the premises were fined £2 each. Kirn and Long were now charged with being found on the premises, and pleaded guilty. Senior Sergeant Harvey told the court that 42. Haining Street was a private residence that had been used for some time as <i gaming house. Counsel said that the real keeper was away and bad left Jim in charge of the hous?. This was denied by the police, who said that accused had been in charge of the gaming house for six or eight weeks Mr E. M. Page. S.M.. imposed a fine of £23 in de f anlt two months. The other two men were fined £'2.
