DISARMAMENT.
GERMANY'S DEFECTIONS. THE 2OOOth NOTE. ENTRY INTO LEAGUE. (By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright.) BERLIN, August 20. German circles apply the terms "strange" and "trivial" to a Note from the Conference of Ambassadors to the German Government. The Note demands : (1) An unambiguous legal decree to terminate the military activity of Nationalist organisations. (2) A discontinuance of the illegal recruiting of the Reichswehr. (3) The fulfilment without delay of the demands of the Inter-Allied Military Commission of Control. Of 2000 Notes regarding disarmament so far been received from the Inter-Allied Military Commission of Control and the Ambassadors' Conference, this latest is regarded ag the most inopportune in view of Germany's application for entry to the League of Nations. At yesterday's meeting of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Reichstag members of the German National party voted in favour of a Communist motion demanding the withdrawal of Germany's application to enter the League.
A refusal has been made by the National party to permit its member; Herr Hoetzsch, to join the German delegation to Geneva, although the Government had asked him to go. This refusal was based on the uncertainty of the present political situation, particularly in view of disarmament problems; also to the fact that the position which the party's representatives would hold at Geneva regarding their freedom of action and influence is not clear.—(Reuter.) WAY CLEAR FOR GERMANY. LONDON, August 29. Viscount Cecil, who is to represent Britain at the forthcoming meeting of the Council of the League of Nations at Geneva, left for Switzerland yesterday. It is now confidently believed that no obstacle will arise to prevent Germany from taking her seat as a permanent member of the Council.— (A. and N.Z.)
