AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
STEEPLECHASE CHAMPIONSHIP. WIN FOB T. M. WILSON. On behalf of the Auckland centre, and In the presence of a large attendance of enthusiasts, the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Cycle Club controlled a five miles cross-country championship at Alexandra Park on Saturday. In order to make this event a more attractive one, ■the club held a sealed handicap which proved a marked success. The weather was ideal for the meeting, and thi»re was a record list of entries. T. M. Wilson won the steeplechase championship from G. Kells by only a| few yards, the other competitors being some distance away. Wilson, Kells, ] Francis Swatton, Beauchamp, bcown, I Cooper, Mayo and Matson were the nine competitors who faced the starter in this "Kells and Wilson took the lead Immediately and were followed closely for the whole of that round by the rest of the field This order remained very much the same until half way through the second round when Swatton, who caught up Kells and Wilson, was running abreast with them, the rest of the field having spread out considerably. Beauchamp and Matson ran dost together while Cooper and Francis and Mayo were about fifty yards further "For the nest two laps the position was about the same. Cooper having caught up a great deal of ground while Francis fell still further back.
