It will probably please the New South Wales Minister of Justice to know that a humanitarian act of his has had some justification by its sequel. Responding to representations by Rev. F. W. Hart, of Kensington, the Minister released from gaoi a life-sentence prisoner named Crook, who had been gaoled as a young man for seriously injuring a man, and had served 17 years. It was represented to the Minister that Crook had expiated his offence, and that he should be allowed to return to his aged mother in England. The passage money was secured through Mr. Hart's efforts, and Crook went Home a few weeks ago. Now comes word that this prodigal son reached England just in time to see his mother —she died scarcely more than a week after his return.
