ASSISTANCE TO SOLDIERS.
£31,000,000 SPENT. PENSIONS EXCEED MILLION YEARLY. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Prime Minister, speaking at the Returned Soldiers' Association function at which he was presented with the gold badge of the association, gave an account of the Government's operations in respect of soldier repatriation and settlement. Up to March 31 last, said Mr. Coates, a total of £31,000,000 had been spent in this direction. Of this amount, £13,500,000 came from ordinarj revenue. Large reductions had been made by the Revaluation Committee, totalling nearly £2,500,000. Mortgages had been reduced by about £60,000, and postponements, revisions of rent and interest, and other concessions amounted to nearly £900,000. In pensions, the Premier continued, £12,569.640 had been paid. The annual amount now paid in pensions was £1,122,843, and the average pension was £54. In all, 84.000 soldiers had been assisted under the Repatriation Act, and the percentage of men unable to repay advances was infinesimal.
