UNDERPAID TYPISTS.

(Tβ the Editor.) 'Sir,—<ln reply to letters appearing in your issue of the 21st instant, under the heading of "Underpaid Typists." I can claim, as director of a commercial college, to have some knowledge of the question of salaries paid to junior and Benior typists by the professional and commercial offices in Auckland. I have no hesitation in saying that salaries here compare favourably with those paid in Canada, the United States and Australia, in comparison with the cost of living in those countries. It may be quite true that 15/ per week is offered by some small business concerns and by others who do not require efficiently trained shorthand -typists. During the past year we have placed a great many junior girls, the average salary received by those who were qualified being certainly not less than 25/ per week; while numbers have started 'considerably higher. Some girls take a three months' course, and at the end of that time look for positions, but naturally no business house is willing to pay good salaries for badly done work. Any average girl with secondary education who devotes from nine to twelve months in training for commercial work can with confidence look forward to starting as a junior at a salary of about 30/ per week and to advancing according to her ability. Our experience of Auckland employers is that they are willing to pay adequate salaries to efficiently trained shorthand-typists.—l am. etc..' A. J.-HUTCHINSON.
