While endeavouring to arrest two men suspected of theft at Lithgow a constable was compelled'to draw his revolver to protect himself. After challenging one man, who was making for him with an upraised bottle, he tired and the bullet entered the man's neck. He died some time later. The police report .nates that the revolver "exploded."— lA. and X.Z.I TOLL OF THE MOTOR. WEEKEND ACCIDENTS. (Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. Motor accidents during the week-end were responsible for four deaths in Syd i ney and one in Melbourne. Several persona were injured.— iA. and N.Z.) A PICTTTRE STOLEN " THE GENTLE SHEPHERD. ' (Received 1 p.m.* yiELBOUP.SE. this day. Attendants entering the National Art Gallery discovered that .Sir David Wilkie's picture, "The Gentle Shepherd." had been torn from its frame and stolen. It was valuen at some hundreds of pounds.— (A. and N.Z.) Sir David Wilkie (1735-1841) was a famous Scottish painter and etcher. The national collections of London and Edinburgh, and the 'municipal galleri >s of Glasgow and Liverpool have valuable examples of Wilkio's pictures. He i J accounted the foremost of British historical genre painters.
