AIMS OF THE INSTITUTE,
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, Sunday
The organising secretary of the Institute of Pacific Relations, Mr. J. Merle Davis, has arrived :n Christchurt-h.
In an interview, Mr. Davis said the institute was founded to carry on research into the underlying causes of racial friction in the Pacific, to disseminate ihe findings of its research and to conduct conferences for the exchange of opinion and points of view on the problems of mutual concern. It was solely concerned with the gathering of accurate, provable facts on the great Pacific issues, and with bringing these facts to the attention of the peoples of the countries concerned. The institute hoped in this way to throw light on vexing international problems and to increase the understanding and friendly relations between peoples of the Pacific. Thus it was hoped i.o settle any friction amicably, rather thnn by tho ultimate clash of arm?.
The heads under which it is proposed to investigate are the movements of population, or immigration, food supply in relation to copulation, the effect of Eastern and Western civilisations and effect of these on each other. A branch of the institute has been fornwl in New Zealand with Professor Condi ifio. Christ - church, as secretary.
Mr. Davis' leaves in a (*\v rtave for Wellington and Auckland, fie will then return to the headquarters of thp institute at Honolulu, after "ompleting a sixmonths' circuit, in which he has visited Japan. China, the Philippine Islands and Java, in addition *o Australia and New Zealand.
