THE FIRST TIME.
"I was creeping along—hadn't gone more than a few yards, then out comes a policeman and puts up his hand."
In this way a man described to Mr. H. A. Young, S.M., how he was caught for riding on the footpath at Christchurch.
"It was the first time I'd ever done it," said the defendant. Senior-Sergeant Martin (cynically): It's always the first time.
The magistrate (to defendant): Are you married? —I am so.
Have you any family? —No, sir, I've cnlv been married fourteen years.
The magistrate: So you still have hopes? The ride cost defendant 5/, plus 7/ costs.
