The Auckland Football Association ie i to-day facing a serious crisis. From ) within its own ranks there threatens j disruption, if not disintegration. While there is diversity of opinion as to the actual causes of the disagreements that ! have arisen, there can be but one ultimate effect if. the differences which have i occurred are not treated tactfully, diplomatically and instantly by all | parties. It is just possible that the consequences of disintegrating or hampering of the association's fullest functioning have been somewhat overclouded in miner and probably mere personal matters. It must, however, be remembered that at present there are over 1000 youths and young men who look to the code as their means of recreation every week for j six months of the year. This includes all grades in Auckland city alone, witlrout reckoning on 22 teams of schoolboy a. In addition, the many hundreds of supportere of the code have to be considered. As members of the sporting public attached to a particular pastime they have every right to expect that their wishes will receive consideration before pettifogging differences are allowed to deprive them of their pleasure. There is, further, on 'the Auckland Football Association a much heavier and more urgent responsibility—that is, the financial obligation which they owe ti» the numerous debenture-holders whose money is invested in Blandford Park. Any defection which may be engendered, from whatever cause amongst the integral bodies comprising the A.F.A., must affect the general bulk of support j afforded the code from week to week. Club feeling cannot be euppressed, and where this is adversely influenced the consequent following of spectators is interfered with. Furtnermore, players are almost bound to respect the actions of their officials. While it cannot at the present juncture be eaid that the rift in the Soccer lute has extended tb the clubs, the fact that it has its existence amongst the responsible administrative bodies is even more serious, and the consequences can be equally devastating. On Tuesday evening the differences which had arisen between the referees and the management of the A.F.A. were not bridged. The cleft was, if anything, widened. Arising out of a complicated question of precedent ac against law, the Junior Management Committee passed a resolution of dissatisfatcion, couched in ominous terms, when an appeal was upheld against their decision. Indications are that the consequences in this direction may not be so serious as at first anticipated, and it will be fortunate if this is so. The Junior Management controls the larger and certainly the vital eection of the code. They may be said to be the nursery and the nurserymen of the game, controlling players from the primary schools right up to the senior grades. Need of a Mediator. To those who are really interested in the code the crisis is a grave one. A general feeling of "jumpiness" or nmtrust has been generated amongst and between members of the various controlling bodies. It is essential that confidence and mutual reliance be at once restored and disputes calmly and dispassionately stated and considered if the prosperity and welfare of Soccer Iβ to be sustained. One of the speediest means of achieving this desirable and urgent end would be a round-table conference by the accredited! representatives of the three organisa- I tions comprising the association, and in I the presence of an able conciliator and mutually respected official of the association. Soccer in Auckland U fortunate in having as its president a gentleman of! the standing of Mr. Ernest Davies, whose practical interest has been so frequently proved. His characteristic tact and diplomacy, added to his keenness for the advancement of the code, are ample j qualifications for the role of mediator in i the serious emergency that ha s arisen. This suggestion is put forward by followers of the game of long standing, who ' feel the greatest regret at the possibility of the hard-won progress of years bein.» banished in a day. |
