RECOGNITION OF SERVICE.

MR. B. BUTTLE ENTERTAINED.

BY INDUSTRIAL, ASSOCIATION. The retirement of Mr. B. Buttle from the position of manager of the Auckland branch of the Kaiapoi Woollen Company, was marked last night by a dinner at the Pacific Club, tendered to himself and Mrs. Buttle, which was attended by a large number of friends. The function was arranged by the president and executive of the Auckland Provincial Industrial Association. Mr. H. Dearsleyj who presided, welcomed the visitors.

In proposing the health of Mr. and Mrs. Buttle, the chairman said their association was started away back 30 or 40 years ago to assist in the development of secondary industries. Great progress had been made since those days. Now there was a Minister of Industries. He hoped that as the years went on secondary industries in New Zealand would become as important as the primary ones were at the present time. Personally he tnouglit the best way to help the Old Country was to take the surplus population and settle them in the overseas Dominions. Mr. Buttle had, for the last 20 years, devoted a lot of time to the interests of secondary industries, and he had filled the president's chair of their association. Their honoured guest was one of those men who did the work without trying to advertise himself. (Applause.) Further tributes to Mr. Buttles personal qualities were pa,id : by Messrs. S. J. Harbutt (vice-president),*W. W. Massey (president of A. and P. Association). F. Hjlls, W. E. Bush T. Macky, P. Lee and Dr. Maguire. Mr. Harbutt then presented to Mr. Buttle an illuminated address bound in mororco, the text, of the address beinnas follows:— D

Lpon rising to reply, Mr. Buttle was loudly applauded. He said he feared kindly feeling towards him had caused some extremely exaggerated remarks regarding his virtues and abilities to be made He then thanked the speakers heartily for the kind thi, lga eaia about -Mrs Buttle and himself. He would greatly value the illuminated address especially as it bore the signatures of his friends.

Referring to the Industrial Association Mr. Buttle said that at one time it was impossible to get anyone to be chairman In 1910, he was appointed to that position and in 1913 they held the New Zealand Exhibition i n the Domain Sir George Elliot being chairman. The credit of £21,000 was expended in beautifying the outer Domain. To-day the association was a real power in the community Jiven the Government began to recognise that fact.

Mrs. Buttle, in a short, bright speech expressed her thanks for the' kindly remarks made about her husband and' herself, after which the function ended with the singing of the National Anthem
