PURCHASE OF TAKAPUNA TRAMS.
(To the Editor.) Sir,—Your correspondent "Ratepayer." who is. of the opinion that our heavyliabilities are the best reasons why we should purchase the Takapuna trams, forgot to mention that a huge loan waa raised to construct concrete roads, with the sole intention of encouraging private motor competition. His remedy for our large indebtedness 13 to pile up more debts, which is unsound finance. His estimate of £70,000 represents only the initial coat of electrification, providing only for a single line of rails, and nothing is allowed for the purchase ot another boat. On the other hand, with two outlets a motor service could easily cope -with the transport problem, and would not necessitate raising fares. The proposal to purchase' the trams originated at Bayswater, and meets with little support in other parts of the borough. A municipal transport service would only become a burden on the ratepayers.—l am. etc., JOHN GUIXIVEN.
