ONE TREE HILL ROAD BOARD.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —Our chairman evidently wishes to have the concreting proposals defeated, as - the estimated cost of the Great South Road is so excessive that it will frighten ratepayers, and the accounts now being sent* out for rates have already given us a shock. If another rise is intended for concreting loans we will have to walk off our properties. The rates arc scandalous now, having jumped nearly 80 per cent this year, and they were higher than the city rates before this jump. The rates alone are now a rent of about as much as a working man can pay. It is time we pot another board to look after the finances. —I am, etc., DISGUSTED RATEPAYER. (To the Editor.) Sir, —The board are about to take a vote from the ratepayers of this district for a loan of £90,000, mostly to be spent on the roads. There is' no doubt the Great South Road, being the main highway, ehould be attended to, but is it right to spend so much money on side roads? Our rates are already quite high enough. For instance, my rates were £12 for a six-roomed house on a. small section, which means 5/ per week. Goodness knows what our rates will rise to if this loan is carried. Ratepayers should seriously consider the matter before they vote, and every ratepayer should vote on an important matter like J his.—l am, etc., RATEPAYER.
