THE REFORM PARTY.

A WOMAN CANDIDATE.

NEW LEAGUE FORMED.

It was decided at a special meeting of women yesterday, that, in the interests of Reform, a women's branch of the New Zealand Political Reform League would be formed in Auckland, and Dr. Buckley-Turkington was elected the league's prospective Parliamentary candidate for this city. Dr. Buckley-Turkington, in thanking the meeting for her election, said that it was not right to sit back while there were many unjust things that could be put right. Someone was needed to voice the opinions of the "all-too-backward Tomen" as well as men. The speaker said that she was not in accord with the practice of women standing as independent candidates. By standing for the Reform party she felt that she was working not only for individual local needs, but for King and Empire. Dr. Buckley-Turkington was -born in Yorkshire, England, and graduated in 1911. She has been a prominent figure in women's organisations for some years, and occupies important positions in many of them. The following officers for the Auckland branch were elected: Patron, the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates; president, Mrs. A. M. Ferguson, vice-presidents, Mesdames White, Smyth, Routley, Buchanan, and Leighton; executive committee, Dr. Hilda Northcroft (chairwoman), Mesdames Graves, McNair, Kidd, Williams, Turner, Streeter, Laing, Culpit, and Miss Moss; representatives on Auckland group executive, Dr. Hilda Northcroft and Mrs. Cadoux; delegates to Dominion conference, Dr. Buckley-Turkington and Mrs. Cadoux; treasurer, Mrs. G. H. Wilson; organising secretary, Mrs. Cadoux.
