MURDER OF DETECTIVES

WIFE AND A CARVING KNIFE.

PERTH, July 7. The inquest concerning the deaths of Detectives Pitman and Walsh, whose bodies were found in an old mining shaft near Kalgoorlie, was continued to-day. In her evidence Mrs. Clarke, the wife of one of the accused men, said that on April 27 both Coulter and- Treffene had used her husband's car, but that her husband was at home when the two men departed for the bush. Her husband told her later tlia* Treffene and Coulter had told him that Pitman and Walsh had come upon them and that they had shot the detectives. Treffene afterwards came back to the hotel. Later. Clarke said he was going to the bush with Coulter that night. He asked witness to give him a carving knife. She asked him not to go, but he replied that he was going as company for Coulter. She then gave him a carving knife. Mrs. Clarke added that she and her husband and Treffene were partners in cold trafficking.
