FOREIGNERS IN CHINA.

ATTRITION CONTINUES

BRITISH NAVAL ACTION

SHANGHAI, July 8. After the murder of a British subject, Mr. Philips, on June 8, the H.M. gunboats Tarantula, Moor Hen and Robin were dispatched to investigate the crime under Commander Fitzmaurice. On their arrival at Wuchow the authorities, under various pretexts, refused to assist the naval authorities by furnishing pilots. After waiting for nearly a fortnight Commander Fitzmauriee blockaded Wuchow on June 24. Early the next morning the Wuchow authorities furnished pilots and the blockade was lifted. The gunboats proceeded up stream. The Canton Government protested to the British Consul-General concerning this action and demanded an apology, an indemnity and the dismissal of Commander Fitzmaurice.—(Reuter.) ,
