W.iitakere Purchase. —A protest against the recent purchase of 130 acres of property at Waitakere for £850 and the purchase of 630 acres for £5000 was made by the City West Ratepayers' Association, who asked why the council did not avail itself of the legislation existing for the taking of lands under the Public Works Act. The communication was merely "received." Gladstone Buildings.—The property inspector reported on Gladstone Buildings, the three-storey brick building at the corner of Queen and Quay Streets which was acquired by the council on May 22 last, and suggested that various improvements should be carried out. Band .-Subsidies.—The Auckland Bands Association suggested that the matter of subsidising bands for park concerts during the ensuing year be placed on the Supplementary Estimates to the amount of £300, or that the amount be paid out of unauthorised expenditure. The matter was referred to the Parks Committee. Unligbted Traffic Domes.—The Newmarket Borough Council wrote stating that it did not approve of unlighted traffic domes at street intersections. Exception was taken to the dome at the intersection of Park Road and Khyber Pass, which area was under their jurisdiction. Unless the dome was lighted they would insist upon its removal. Reporting on the matter the city engineer stated that it was an oversight that the Newmarket Borough Council was not consulted over the installation of the dome. If Newmarket did not want the dome the better course would be to remove it altogether, unless they were prepared to pay half the cost of lighting. The matter was referred to the Works Committee.
