SURPRISE PACKETS AGAIN.
THREE CIVIL SERVANTS FINED.
Another £3 is to go to the Consolidated Fund as the result of fines imposed at the Police Court this morning on persons who had assisted in the disposal of surprise packets. Three civil servants were charged with disposing of property l>r means of lottery surprise packets. Mr. Schramm was present to plead guilty on behalf of all tfnee defendants, whom, he said, had sold surprise packets in aid of the Y.W.C.A. appeal. Counsel mentioned that those who organised the effort had been careful to see that good prizes and value were offered. One of the defendants went to the police station, and saw an officer aboat the matter, when he was informed that everything would bo all so long as a breach of the by-laws was not committed. Accordingly he had been lulled into a sense of false security. Mr. Poynton said that defendants would be treated the same as others who had been charged. Fines of £1 and costa. were inflicted in each case.
