BREAKING THE SABBATH.

CELESTIALS BEFORE COURT.

- ANXIOUS TO KEEP THE LAW."

(By Telegraph.—Special to "Star.")

WELLINGTON, this day. That two Chinese, in endeavouring- to comply with the law in one direction, ran foul of it in another, was a statement made by counsel concerning A-h Shew and Ah Low, who pleaded guilty to a charge of working at their calling on Sunday. Counsel said accused were told one Friday that they had to clear out a drain, which was becoming offensive, and were so anxious to comply with the law that they worked on Sunday to finish the drain. "I understand they were digging in the garden," put in the sub-inspector. Counsel: Those are not my instructions. A constable said he saw defendants digging in the garden. They were not clearing a drain; but stopped when witness warned them that they were breaking the law. Defendants were each fined £1.
