SAHIBS ENTERTAINED.
INDIAN ARMY GUESTS. HONOURED BY HOCKEYISTS. | SPIRIT OF COMRADESHIP. i The sahibs of Indian hockey team j were the guests of honour at a dinner , that was given on Saturday evening : at the Grand Hotel by the Auckland ! Hookey Association. The sahibs were ! Captain D. T. Cowan, M.C.. Captain H. ] V. Cox, Captain A. A. Alexander and ; Captain E. A. Belchamber. There were ; about forty present, including the Auckland representative team. The visitors were welcomed by the ! president of the A.H.A.. Mr. L. C. Kent, ' and enthusiastic reference to the success . of the tour was made during the even- j ing by Mr. L. H. Norton, vice-patron, ! in proposing the toast of "Our Guests." j He said that New Zealand had had its eyes opened and had learned much from the exhibitions of the Indian Army ; team, and that, on grounds and under ! conditions that were all in favour of . the home teams. I Captain Cowan replied to the toast. He made special reference to the match of the afternoon. It did not prove that i hockey" was of a lower standard in i Auckland than in the other centres. In j many ways it whs superior, and he specially mentioned the elimination of ! the, drive and the quick passing from ! the. halves. He thought that was the only method. As for the ground, he considered it was in excellent condition, I and it was a treat to play on it. The toast of "The Auckland Team" ' was proposed by Mr. Kent. He said j he. was proud of the Auckland boys for the way they had stood up to a team that was excellent. Mr. E. A. Burton, captain of the team, replied. He said that it was an honour to meet an Indian Army team. j The other toasts honoured were: "New Zealand Hockey Association," pro- < posed by Mr. A. Playle and replied to ty Mr. P. X. Quatermain; "The Refe- '■ rees," proposed by Mr. H. B. Burnett ■ and replied to by Messrs. L. H. Norton and L. C. Kent; "Kindred Sports," propos«d by Mr. H. B. Speight and replied to by Mr. W. A. Gray, representing the ] A.R.U., Mr. W. J. Hammill, representing the A.R.L., and Mr. L. C. H. Daw-son. : representing the Auckland Football ; Association; and "The Military Authori- i ties," proposed by Mr. E. S. Watts and I replied to by Lieutenant R. S. Judson, ' V.C. ! The occasion was brought to a fitting j close, by the singing of "Auld Lang j Syne" and the National Anthem.
