EARTHQUAKES.
HEAVY DAMAGE IN ITALY. ROME, June 28. Two distinct earthquake shocks, with a very short interval between them, occurred in Italy this morning. They lasted 20 seconds. They were the heaviest shocks felt for years. Reports from the province of Foggia indicate that more than 2000 houses were destroyed by the earthquake in several villages.— (Reuter.) DAMAGE IN SUMATRA. HOUSES BADLY SHAKEN. (Received 2.30 p.m.) WELTEVREDEN (Java), June-28. Severe earthquake shocks have been felt in Central Sumatra. The houses of the Governor and many Europeans at Padang have been badly damaged. — (A. and N.Z.)
Sumatra is a large and mountainous island bf the Dutch East Indian Archipelago, situated north-west of Java. Padang, the capital, has a population of 150,000, mainly of Malay stock.
