SURPRISE PACKETS.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —With reference to your report of the proceedings against myself in the.Police Court yesterday, the remarks of the detective, as reported by. you, were open to the construction that in my conversation with the detective I stated' tha-t the scheme was a "have." Tvhave no recollection of having used the word at all. Indeed, I am pretty certain 1 never did. The phrase which the detective attributed to mc seems rather to have been his own free and unauthorised translation of the sentiments I expressed with regard to the fact that I, who had nothing whatever to do with tbe surprise packet scheme, should be the one to be prosecuted. Perhaps it is superfluous to say that if T had considered that the scheme itself was a "have." I would have taken care to ensure that the company which I represent and its employees would have had nothing whatever to do with it. —I am, etc., ROBERT BURNS.
rTo the Editor.l Sir. —Further to this controversy, there's nothing new in the sale of these. Bigger packets and greater surprises have been on sale in our midst for some time. Perhaps, after Mr. Coates' remarks on gambling. I should refrain from placing the public upon the good thing. Well, here it is. Purchase from your local grocer either a lib or 21b tin of preserved meat, and on your arrival borne, 'examine the label of your purchase: if the label states 16ozs or 32ozs, well you have won the big prize. I am etill trying, but my luck is out.— I am. etc.. ' NOT LUCKY.
