Hughes. < Special Meeting.—A special meetinz pre- I ceded the ordinary meeting tor the purpose , of passing the necessary legal resolution in j connection with the borrowing ot £2000 | without the ratepayers' sanction, the object | in so doing being the relief of unemploy- | ment. The work to be undertaken is the construction where necessary and the improvement of the footpaths on the Great North lload and the bitumen strips at intersections of side streets to the concrete road. Mr. Stacev wished to know if it was intendedto - carry out the work by day labour or contract. 'The chairman favoured the work being done by contract, especially as the Board had not the staff or machinery to carry it out successfully. He considered it would be possible i« make stipulations in respect to the employment of local labour where at all practicable. It was decided to carry out the work, subject to the Minister's consent, by contract, local labour to be fully considered. Mr. Wells, on behalf of the" business men of the . township, approached the Board and asked for Totara' Avenue to be considered in connection with the above proposal. The work referred to being the concreting of the roadway from the railway line to the Great North Road, kerbing and channelling, and the repair of the footpaths. Mr. Wells con- ■ dered it to be as urgent as that of the <;reat North Road. The Board did not j favour extending the present scheme without the ratepayers consent, the estimated cost of which was £4023. One motor bus had knocked over a lamp-post on the 17th inst.. putting it out of action. Street Lighting.— Mr. S. H. Pryor wrote asking for an extension of the street lighting arrangements from Wiilerton Avenue along South Lynn Road to Golf Road. The Board agreed to the extension to Parker Avenue provided the Waitemata County Council share the rost : beyond that point was purely a matter for the County Council. Rimu Street.—Letters were received from the Kcjston Ratepayers' Association and Mr. E. M. Murley re the condition of this road. It was stated that the buses were a boon to this side of the district, but would have to be discontinued if improvements were not carried out. The work was authorised. -Neville Avenue.—Mr. (". There were ten jobs in the course of construction. j Gardner Street. — A lengthy letter was re- ! ceived from Mr. Henry Green, who complained of the flooding of his land owing tc the Gardner Street culvert not being large enough to carry the storm-water. Mr. (ireen pointed out that last year's balancesheet showed a balance of £526 15/11 in the storm-water account. The clerk stated that the credit balance to date was £350. The Board decided to keep this amount in reserve, especially as there were a number of culverts that might require urgent alteration. In the meantime a new culvert for Gardner Street is provided for in the forthcoming loan proposals. New Roads.—Mr. Nelson wrote in respect to the condition of Trentham and Cralgbank Avenues. He desired the Works Committee to visit the locality and hear the history of the work, which, be stated, would not look well on paper. The committee accepted the invitation. . He contended that the street had been formed in such a manner that the storm-water could not get away. The engineer stated that, although the road was fairly flat, the trouble referred to was chiefly caused through silt. Wood Street.—The foreman submitted an estimate of £31 D/ 9 for the metalling of the ciay portion of this road. The Boar* decided to carry out the work provided the Waitemata County Council share the cost. New Picture Theatre.—The owners of the Delta Theatre renewed their application for a license. The building inspector reported that he anticipated all work would be finished by the end of the present week. The Board decided to again defer the application pending a report from Mr. E. E. Powell.
