OIL ON THE SEA.

AN UNDOUBTED EVIL.

FISH HARVEST AFFECTED,

LONDON, June 18.

The "Daily Mail," in approving of an international conference at Washington for dealing with oilships' pollution of the sea, points out that the oil discharged annually amounts to half a million barrels.

There is scarcely a town on the British coast which has not suffered, therefrom, it says, adding that there are now meagre catches of fish where they were formerly abundant. The "Mail" also argues that a film of oil on the sea is responsible for climatic changes, affecting the rainfall and the balance of the electricity in the atmosphere. The theory may seem far fetched, but since oil has bee- generally used, there has b-en a series of bad weather years in Britain, although these may be due to the usual periodical fluctuations.—(Sydney "Sun" Cable )
