EMBANKMENT SUBSIDES.
DELAY TO CONTRACT. RAILWAY WORK NEAR TAURANGA. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TAURANGA, this day. A serious subsidence has taken plac« at the Wainui Stream, near Aongatete, which, it is feared, will involve several weeks' delay in the completion of Sir W. G. Armstrong, Whitworth and Company's contract for the construction of that particular section of the East Coast railway. On the Waihi side of the Wainui Stream is a large swamp, over which the contractors were building a substantial embankment to give an approach to the bridge over the stream itself. On Thursday night there were extensive subsidences of the embankment at three or four points, at one place to the extent of six feet. Some of the piles of tlio bridge work which have already been driven were also affected, being thrown out of plumb, and necessitating them being pulled out and re-driven. The full extent of the damage has not yet been measured up, but it is evident that the contractors will be compelled to spend a considerable amount of time and money in order to make good the damage and complete their contract in due time in March next.
