APPEALS FOR UNEMPLOYED.

NO OFFICIAL "COLLECTORS." A WARNING TO THE PUBLIC. For the benefit of those Aucklanders who may feel disposed to give assistance towards the relief of the unemployed in this city, it is pointed out that there is only one official committee in existence, and that is the Citizens' Relief Committee, which- meets each day at the Town Hall, and of - which the Mayor is chairman. Further, this committee has no "collectors" —it has no people going about collecting money or articles. An appeal has been made through the Press for those who wish to assist to send their donations to the committee at the Town Hall. It has been thought necessary to bring these facts under the notice of citizens, for it is reported that certain collectors have been operating during the last few days Citizens should beware of any individuals who call and make appeals on behalf of the unemployed. No person has been authorised to act as a collector for any organisation connected with the relief of the unemployed, and any person doing so is acting on his or her own responsibility. % In this connection, Nurse Clayton, of McKelvie Street, Ponsonby, recently made an appeal for the needy and unemployed, and collectors went round on her behalf. In a notice in the "Star" recently, "Nurse Clayton and committee thanked the public for their generous response to the appeal," and added that "people are warned against giving donations or parcels unless a book giving authority to collect and signed by Nurse Clayton is produced. All our canvassers, men and women, are reliable." Nurse Clayton was asked by the Relief Committee to stop her collectors from canvassing the city, as it was desirable to centralise the appeal. This request was complied with, and the money and clothiner collected by her was handed over" to the committee. All the books distributed to her collectors by Nurse Clayton were also banded over to the committee. It now appears that some unknown persons, masquerading under the selfmade title of "a collector for Nurse Clayton," have been coing the rounds this-week, collecting money and clothing. Two youths are alleged to have called at Parnell. Remuera, and Epsom. At one house in Epsom they are stated to have told the owner that they ha« collected some £30 during the week. Mr. J. Melline (Acting Town Clerk) to-day said that these persons had no authority whatever to collect in this way, and Nurse Clayton also said today that it was certainly not on her authority that the canvassing was being continued. There is urgent need of every form of assistance in the unemployed line at the ore-sent time. Those able to give clothing should do so throusrh the central committee at tile Town Hall.
