ACTIVITY IN ANZAC AVENUE.

Never was it more apparent that building goes ahead in Auckland with remarkable avidity than it is at the present time, and more especially when it comes to Anzac Avenue. This part of the city is a veritable hive of industry, and the vacant sections are rapidly becoming things of the past as the shapes of large structures make their appearance. There are now in the course of erertion six big buildings, rive of which will bo dealt with in this column. The total amount involved in tho five buildings runs into nearly £100,000.

A 'building tbat will be ten storeys higb when completed lias been commenced in Anzac Avenue for Mr. Albert Spencer. It will be used as offices, sample rooms, aud show rooms, and will be one of the finest structures in Auckland, if not in Xew Zealand, and will be known as the Tasman Building. It is being erected on the American style of steel frames, tlie doors in the building being practically the only wood work. There will lie eight storeys and the basement, while the caretaker's rooms will be erected at the top of the building, thus forming an extra storey. The structure will have a frontage to Anzac Avenue of 65ft, by a depth of approximately 65ft. Up to the present the foundations have been laid and tbe huge steel girders in places have been erected to the height of four storeys. The work of erecting these immense girders is naturally slow work, but once they arc all in place, rapid progress will be made with the interior, which is to be finished in white plaster. The front of the structure will be finished in . white Atla s plaster. The whole building will be appointed in the latest style and will rival anything of its nature in Auckland. The'contract price is £27.099. Messrs. Jones and Adams, civil engineers are the architects, and Mr. N. Cole is the contractor.

A large warehouse of eight storeys is to go up opposite the Tasman uildings in Anzac Avenue for Messrs. Max Paykel Buildings, Ltd. This structure, which is to cost in the vicinity of 40,000, will provide ample space for the relief of any congestion in the city. The building is to be let in warehouse blocks. It will be a handsome structure finished in attractive design, and will be a decided acquisition to the Avenue. There will be eight storeys in Anzac Avenue and six in Emily Place, while a caretaker's house will make the ninth stoiey. The frontage to the former is 100 ft, and to the latter 64ft, while there is qgbpth of 108 ft. Aj start has already been made on the construction of the lnrld : ng, the work being in the hands of Messrs. F. J. Fawcett, Ltd. The architect is Mr. D. Paterson. , Another warehouse that has reached the first floor in construction is that being erected by Mr. A. G. Ba<rnall in the same -locality. It is a concrete building of four storeys. There is a frontase of 80ft to Anzac Avenue by a depth of 100 ft. The building, which is to cost £23.000. is being erected hy Mr. Clements. Otahulm. Messrs. Milllken and Brentnall are the architects.

A four-storeyed structure for Messrs. Wallace Bros, is also bein_r built in the locality. The property has a frontage to Anrao Avenue of 40ft by a dentil of inrtft. It is a brick and concrete buildinsr and will be entirely fi re-nroof. Tt is to be n*M as a ware>>nn=e and is costing £9000. Messrs. and Brentnall are the architects,, and Mr. Clements is the contractor.

A handsome structure of six storeys and basement is being erected for Messrs. P. R. Colebrook, Ltd. It is located near the top end of thß avenue and lias a frontage of 40ft by a depth of 82ft. It will be a brick" and concrete structure and will bb used as a warehouse. A start has also been made on this building. Mr. W. Ball is the contractor, and Messrs. Holman , rind Moses aro the architects.

A start has been made on the demolition of that block which until recently was occupied.* by Aley's Book Shop, on the corner of East Street and Karangahape Road. Once the old buildings are down a start will be made on the erection of the two-storeyed structure for the Union Bank of Australia. Th's building, which will be an asset to that part of the city, has been described before. Messrs. W. J. Fnwcott, Ltd., is the contractor, and Me=srs. Swan, Lawrence and Swan, Wellington, are the architects.
