RADIO INSPECTORS.

HONORARY APPOINTMENTS.

MINISTER EXPLAINS DUTIES.

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)

WELLINGTON, Thursday

An official statement has been made by the secretary of the General Post Office in connection with the controversy regarding the duties of four honorary inspectors who have been selected to assist the departmental radio inspectors in carrying out their duties.

He states that these appointments were made at the request of the radio societies.

The Christchurch societies offered to delegate certain members to undertake any duties required of them by the district radio inspector. This offer was accepted and all other societies notified the Department that they would cooperate in a similar way to the Christchurch society, and nominated four members who were willing to undertake the duties. The appointees were notified that they had been appointed honorary deputy radio inspectors under the direction of the departmental radio inspector at Wellington, and their duties would be to assist the Department in seeing that the provisions of the Statute and the regulations applying to radio receiving, amateur transmitting and receiving, and experimental stations were observed.

The secretary states it will be observed that no reference was made to such matters as right of entry or penalties for refusing to permit inspection by one of these honorary officers. It is quite correct that the regulations require all radio stations to be open for inspection at any time by any radio inspector, but it ie also quite clear that the Minister's powers may only be delegated to officers of the Post and Telegraph Department.
