COMMUNITY SINGING.
SEASON OPENED TO-DAY.
The first community sing of the 192? season was held to-day in the Town Hall from 12.30 to 1.30. The building was crowded to its utmost capacity. The chair was taken, in the absence of the Mayor, by Councillor W. J. Holdsworth. The song leader was Mr. Con Moreni, of the Silk Stocking Revue Company, and he was assisted by the Rev. Jasper Calder. Song books containing the words of 67 eongs which had been donated by a city printing fifni were distributed among the audience. In opening the season, Mr. Holdsworth said that the gatherings served two purposes. First, they enabled people to spend a very pleasant hour; and secondly, they afforded people an opportunity of helping a very deserving cause. As the number of song books is limited. Mr. Holdsworth urged patrons to take good care of them, and to bring them along with tlinm every week.
The Rev. Jasper Calder conducted the opening songs, ;mrl then handed over to his successor, Mr. Con Moreni. Mr. Cyril James sang a song entitled "It Will be All the Same a Hundred Years From Xow," A collection in aid of the non-endowed city charities was taken up.
