THE ORCHARD TAX.
DISAPPEARING THROUGH LEV'S EFFECT OX CONSTITUTION. ''Are we going to have the orchard tax continued T' ! asked Mr. T. C. Brash, president of the X.Z. Fruitgrowers' Federation, at the conference of Auckland fruitgrowers to-day. ilr. Brash explained that there wag at present an export levy and an orchard tax in connection with fruit. Where the levy was greater than the orchard tax the fruitgrower concerned paid no orchard tax. During the past year the heavy increase in the export of fruit had meant that the receipts from the orchard tax had been very greatly reduced. The whole basis of the constitution of the federation was based on the orchard tax, and if that tax disappeared a new constitution would have to be formed.
Mr. Brash described the present constitution as unsatisfactory, and important changes were likely.
