UNEMPLOYMENT.
'To the Editor.)
Sir, —Although I am considered a good car painter, also writer and liner, I have hardly done a stroke for a month. I also know several first-class car painters who are unable to get a job. The thing seerne to mc to bs absurd. Here on one hand we have several expert car and truck painters walking round, whilst on the other there are hundreds of cars and trucks that badly need repainting. I should like to give a word of advice to business men and employers generally. Don't interfere with your employees' pay envelopes, and don't dispense with any of your 6taff unless absolutely necessary. Keep them on even if it is renovating your own building or house property. If they are unemployed they will have to be fed, and you will have to do your bit towards it. "High wages and a high standard of living" means prosperity, and unemployment automatically ceases. I am, etc., DICK EDELSTEN. (To the Editor.) Sir, —Te know the Government 13 at its wits' end to meet the many calls on its purse, and our public bodies' resources are taxed to breaking-point. Why not a national art union, under the auspices of leading citizens, to help us to tide over the difficulties of our less fortunate brothers? People dearly love to "take a chance," and I am sure such a scheme would prove a great success. The proceeds (profits) would be delegated to improving and making new recreation grounds for our rising boys and girls, or in other ways, which would benefit the public generally, and provide employment for hundreds of those who need work to tide them over the lean portion of the year.—l a m, etc., JOSEPH A. PEARCE.
