RECOVERY!

YORKSHIRE OUT FOR 155.

AUSTRALIA 177 FOR THREE

GRIMMETT COMES OFF,

&y Cable.—Press Association.—Copyright.)

(Received 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 7. The Yorkshire team was dismissed for 155, and when stumps were drawn Australia had 177 runs on for three wickets.

The attendance was 17.000. Oldroyd lost a number of runs by slowness to start, but later he got Grimmett away repeatedly. Only good fielding prevented the runs mounting. Richardson and Grimmett were difficult to play, and the score increased at the average rate of a single per over. When 40, Mitchell gave an easy chance both to Ellis at the wicket and to Gregory at fine slip, off Grimmett. Eventually Oldroyd, after a lifeless couple of hours relieved by rare flashes of brilliance, made a tame return to Grimmett's hands. The board then read 105 for two.

Next over, without alteration in the total, Mitchell was beaten by Richardson, facing whom he was never easy. Rhodes and Turner were content to keep their wickets up, and took no risks. Rhodes was missed twice in one over off Grimmett, by. Collins at silly point, and Gregory in the slips. Then he was easily stumped by Ellis. With the score at 120 for eight, Crawford joined Lupton. After a lucky first ball, he settled down and drove the second out of the ground. He gave a hard chance to Collins and a hot return to Grimmett, neither being accepted. The batsmen roused enthusiasm by the manner wherein they drove Grimmett. When the total was" 153 Gregory scattered Lupton's wickets. Crawford continued forcing tactics, but failing to get under Grimmett, was taken at third man low down, after a spirited effort. AUSTRALIA IN AGAIN. Robinson and Waddington were entrusted with the ball in Australia's second attempt. Woodfull, playing back to a well-pitched delivery, ■was easily taken at second slip. Andrews lost no time in getting off the mark, and played Robinson freelr. Bardsley was sound. He drove and glanced Waddington in characteristic fashion. The appearance of Douglas and Crawford with the ball induced caution on the part of the batsmen. Both kept an unplayable length. Andrews when 23, in attempting to turn Crawford, cocked the ball up dangerously near mid-on. Bardsley when 27 gave a chance at the wicket off CrawI ford, whose bowling did not reach the I standard of the first innings, but was treated with respect by the batsmen. The latter were looking for the ball, which was so destructive the first day.

Facing Rhodes, Bardsley was careful, I and got an occasional stolen single. Andrews, however, went out and punched him hard. He scored many singles till the gaps in the field were closed up. Bardsley was run out in attempting a quick single, when Robinson returned quickly. Collins opened very quielty, and took no sort of risk, but Andrews continued to off-drive Rhodes with ease. He pulled Crawford attractively. Crawford* had lost his sting, and was inconsistent. When 18 Collins- was badly missed in a chance of stumping off Douglas. Dolphin fielded the ball, but inexplicably refrained from breaking the wicket when Collins was well out. Andrews played confidently, and sent all bowlers to the boundary. Collins brought off a number of crisp strokes round cover, and he also timed well. Andrews was caught by Oldroyd in the last over ; before stumos were drawn. He had batted 165 minutes and hit eight fours. The scores are: — YORKSHIRE.—First Innings.
