ALLEGED BURGLARY,

Arthur Tilling (32) and William Charles Westwood (30), each charged with breaking and entering the shop Of victor Speight and stealing jewellery, were remanded to appear on June 17. TO PAY COSTS ONLY. When charged witlf being an idle and disorderly person, in tbat he placed himself in Queen Street for the purpose of begging alms, John Biely (53) emphatically pleaded not guilty. Constable Scandrett told the magistrate that he saw accused stop several strangers in the street at 6.30 last night. At 7 o'clock witness saw Biely accost three more men. Accused: I never asked for any money. Richard Rudolph said that Biely stopped him and asked him for a shilling. He asked witness' brother for £10. Biely: I never mentioned £10 at all. The witness must be silly to say that. I work in the Waitakeres, and only came to town on Saturday. The magistrate ordered accused to pay costs of 12/6, in default three days' imprisonment. FILTHY LANGUAGE James Butcher, a middle-aged man. was sent to gaol for seven "days for using obscene language in Queen Street. He was fined £2, or three days for being drunk. ADMITTED TO PROBATION. A man of 36. for whom Mr. Singer appeared, pleaded guilty to a charge of fraudulently failing to' account to his employer for £8 3/11, thereby committing theft.

Accused's employer, a grocer stated that accused had collected the money and had misanprom-iated it. Detective O'Sullivan said that accused, who admitted the offence when first questioned, was a married man with four children, and had never previously been in trouble. His wife was at prasent in a serious state of health The whole trouble with accused, said Mr. Singer, was that owing to ill health in his family, and that he was paying a rent of £2 5/ per week, lie had been tempted to keep the money collected Counsel asked that accused should be admitted to probation. Mr. Povnton agreed, and admitted the man to two years probation. He was ordered to make full restitution.
