TIMBER INDUSTRY.

SOUTH ISLAND PRICES. A Press Association telegram published last week notified that a trade war has brought about reductions in the price of timber in the South Island. Details now to hand show that as a consequence of the revised price list issued by the Korth Canterbury Timber Merchants' Association, the principal classes of timber used in the construction of houses will be reduced by about 121 per cent. This will bring about a cheapening in the cost of the standard-sized bungalow by about £23. The action has been induced by undercutting from outside the ranks of the association. Men acquainted with the situation state that there has been no drop in the cost of production, and that the timber merchants have been content, for the time being, to share their profits, which had been moderate. The drop is chiefly confined to O.b! timber, flooring, and- weather-boarding! The drop in 0.8. timber is 3/ a lob Slip, feet, the rate of Bin 0.8. having been reduced from 25/ to 22/.
