OHINEMURI COUNTY.

MONTHLY COUNCIL MEETING. The monthly meeting o£ the Ohinemuri County Council was held on Saturday afternoon, the chairman, Mr. H. M. Corbett, presiding. Old Te Aroha Road.—The resident Public Works engineer wrote advising that the council's previous resolution relative to the future maintenance of the metalling proposed on the old Te Aroha Road did not fulfil the Department's requirements. It was resolved that the council set aside £10 annually to maintain the portion of the road referred to. Limit of Expenditure.—The Auckland office of the Public Works Department advised that the amount the couhcil could Bpend in cash for the financial year ending March 31, 1927, had been limited to £2SS)S, under the automatic allocation system. The chairman explained that unexpended grants totalled £2165, which sum would require to be revoted. , Speed of Motors.—The Auckland Automobile Association wrote recommending that the speed of motors through the Karangahake Gorge be not more than 20 miles an hour, and 10 miles at the corners. The association also offered to supply signboards. The recommendation was adopted, and the offer accepted. ' Sheep Pens at Waikino.—lt was resolved to write to the Railway Department and ask that its engineers go into the question of providing sheep pens for loading purposes at the Waikino railway station. Method of Rating.—The chairman said he had given *«. promise to support the taking of a poll on 'the adoption of rating on unimproved value. He thought all councillors were in favour of the ehangp. and that petitions should be. circulated with a view to obtaining signatures from 15 per cent of tho ratepayers as required. The matter was deferred for one month.

Flood Damage.—The engineer (Mr. Edward Shaw) reported that during the recent floods the worst damage was at tho Golflen Cross, through an erosion on the lower side of the road, and that at this point it will be necessary to place a groyne to divert the stream. The bridge at the waterfall, Waikino, was washed away, necessitating the erection of a new structure. Maratoto Road received a washout." and also minor damage was done to Crean's Road, Waihi.
