WONDERFUL CHEESE.
CREW KNOCKED OUT. TWO OFFICERS UNCONSCIOUS. ONE IN HOSPITAL. The following cablegram from London E dated April 24 was published in a Van- \ couver paper: — ( "Keep the lid on," ofttimes a jocular j dinner-table remark accompanying the . exhibition of the ever-popular gorgon- , zola, could not be applied in the case |, of a cargo of wonderful cheese just dis- . charged at an English port.. . "Tons of the strongest cheese ever , sent to London were stored in the s.s. , "When unloading operations were commenced, it is alleged, the fumes arising from the cargo knocked out of actios many brawny dockers and members of j - the crew. J . "The second officer was surprrised j ; when the men faced him on deck and |'■ made the complaint. The officer went down below decks to investigate. 'He had not been long in the hold before he, too, was so overcome by the fumes that he was rendered uncon- , scious. The chief engineer went to the ' ; rescue, and was also overcome. They ! were eventually rescued, and the Bootle j ambulance was summoned. I Efforts were made by artificial respiration to bring the men round, and this | proved successful in the case of the chief engineer, but the second officer had to be taken to the hospital before he recovered, and was detained." [We omit the name of the vessel, which is given, having no means of checking the accuracy of the story.]
