RELIEF FOR UNEMPLOYED.
- » HELP FROM DEVONPORT. PROPOSALS FOR URGENT WORK. The meeting of the Devonport ratepayers held last evening accorded the Borough Council unanimous support to any proposals it might consider for the relieving of unemployment. The Mayor, Mr. T. Lamont, outlined many urgent works which required to be carried out, but for which there was no money owing to the recent loan proposal having been rejected. If the Government would authorise the raising of a loan without reference to the ratepayers, some of the work could be proceeded with, thus finding employment for a number of men. At the present tiem the borough were employing six returned soldiers in removing noxious weeds on Mount Victoria._ One speaker said that, should the Government grant authority for the raising of the loan, it was the duty of the borough to undertake without delay' any scheme of urgent Work.
