SUPPORTING LOCAL INDUSTRY.

TAKAPUNA COUNCIL'S ACTIO!

A QUESTION OF TIMBER.

A resolution to support local industry whenever possible was adopted by tht Takapuna Borough Council at its meetinjr last evening.

In moving the resolution, Mr. F. S. X. Gaudin, said that at a recent meeting of the councils finance committee an account of £113 has been presented for payment for a quantity of oregon timber for u?e in the borough sswtr. It was a well-known fact that oregon pine decayed very rapidly when in contact with damp concrete or in confined places.

The sawrailling industry in New Zetland, continued Mr. Gaudin, was »t present in a very sad state as a result of the Government permitting the importation of cedar free of duty and oregon at a nominal duty. 'As ; if that alone had not been sufficient to cripple the industry, the Governnwnt in September last bad increased the railage on timber by about twenty-fire •per cent. Thus the freight on timber from the sawmillins towns wan hither than that on oregon brought from America. The position w»3 *o sernjni that some mills in New Zealand wew considering whether they would .reduce their outputs or close down altogether. There were other local indu«lries affected in the same way at timber. He was of the opinion that all bodies, should, as far as possible, srpport local products, thus setting an example.

After the Mayor (Mr. J. D. Moosqnl and other members of the council hsd spoken in support of Mr. Gaudin'! views, the resolution was adopted, till town clerk beinp instructed in futtrr* to order New Zealand goods and natural products when such could be utilised without being detrimental to the il" terests of tbe ratepayers.
