RULES NEEDED.
FOR MOTORS AT CROSSINGS.
The necessity for instituting a defraita rule of precedence for the guidance of motor cars meeting on crossings wil mentioned at last night's meeting *f the Auckland Automobile Association. Mr. H. C. Jones considered that either the "off-side rule" or the "near-side role" would abolish the confusion which pi*» vailed at present. It was stated by Mr. A. Grayson that some time ago the North and South Island Motor Unions endeavoured to introduce legislation to provide for the "off-side rule," but these had failed. Without legal sanction the mere encouragement of a custom was useless. Mr. M. H. Wynyard said that a declaratory judgment upon the respective merits of both rules might be sought in the Supreme Court. If this could be obtained it might serve as a guide to magistrates. The service officer, Mr. R. E. Champtaloup, stated that the alternatives bad* been investigated by the Automobile Association of Great Britain, which had decided in favour of the "off-side ruleOn the motion of Mr. .Tones, it was resolved to make the question the subject of a remit at the next conference of the North and South Island Motor Unions.
