BUS AND VAN COLLIDE.
CHARGE AGAINST VAN DRIVER. I FINED _5. LICENSE CANCELLED FOR TWO YEARS. Some time ago, on a Sunday afternoon at Point Chevalier, ._ motor bus and an ice cream van came into collision, with the result that the motor bus was overturned and several passengers slightly injured. Some time afterwards the driver of the bus appeared before the Police Court on a charge of negligent driving, when Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., held that on the evidence, he was in no way to blame and dismissed the charge. In fact, the magistrate wondered why it was ever brought against the bus driver. Yesterday afternoon the driver of the ice cream van, A. Newton, appeared, also charged with negligent driving and cutting a corner. Much evidence was heard. Mr. Osborne Lilly, who appeared for defendant, submitted that his client was in no way to blame. If he did cut the corner, submitted counsel, that proved that Newton would show the bus driver, who was behind him, that he was turning off the main road. However, Mr. Hunt found defendant guilty of the negligent driving charge and imposed a fine of £5 and costs. The magistrate said that it was Newton's second offence and that he was not going to have men coming up on charges of negligent driving the second time. Newton's license would also lie cancelled for a period of two years.
