DISEASE IN BANANAS
DESTROYS PLANTATIONS. (Rpccived 10 n.va.) SYDNEY, May 13. The New South Walee, Queensland, and Commonwealth Governments are jointly considering the recommendations in the final report of the committee which investigated bunchy top disease in bananas, with a view to further research and joint legislative action. Report * ftow that so far as the banana producing areas in New South Wales are concerned, fully 00 per cent have gone out of production, and banana growing as a profitable industry has practically disappeared. The committee found that no protective or remedial measuree were being , taken, no immune banana stock was available, and that measures for the eradication of tlie disease in affected were the only means of effective control. The committee recommends stringent measures controlling banana plantations, destroying all infected sources, hnd supplying healthy plants. This means a levy on the industry, supplemented by assistance from Governments concerned.
