PROPOSED HOSPITAL INQUIRY.

(To the Editor.) Sir. —Will you permit mc to comment upon the suggested points of the proposed. Auckland Hospital inquiry? It seems useless and unnecessary to indU'lo questions as to errors already made, more especially those embodied in structural features of completed buildings. What is done is done, and cannot now ho undone. Questions as to the composition of the controlling board, and relating to possible improvements in management, the inclusion of professional advisers, and arrangements for the comfort and general welfare of patients and staff may all lie productive of desirable improvement, but to place anyone who lias done his best in a position of disgrace, to make this inquiry a weapon to damage the reputation of any man concerned is to prevent a calm and impartial consideration of those things affecting the future of tbe hospital. To probe too closely into the past , reminds mc of a doctor who, when confronted with a physical injury within his ability to treat and repair, insists upon a reconstructon of the cause of the injury, and seeks to expose the sharers in a domestic squabble, without in any way benefiting his patient. I heard one doctor say to another, "The bone is fractured; set it. It is no affaii of yours who broke it." Is it not possible to level a laundry floor without stirring up strife? —I am, etc., IMPLUMIS.
