ANZAC DAY.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —One cannot feel surprised that some comment is being made upon the fact that the banks are closing on Monday, presumably in commemoration of Anzac Day. which, this year, falls on Sunday. The commemoration services are all to take place on Sunday, the appropriate day on this occasion. From a strictly legal point of view the banks no doubt ate in order in closing on Monday. Anzac Day has been made & statutory holiday, to be as the Act says, "In all respects as if Anzac Day w«re a Sunday." The Banking Act provides that where bank holidays fall on a Sunday, the next day following shall be observed as a holiday, and if that day were also a bank holiday, then the day. following (Tuesday) would also be observed as a holiday. It seems to the spirit in which it is intended Anzac Day should be observed that any advantage should be taken for the creation of a n><Sfe holiday, and it can hardly ha suggested that in this case the banks or any one else who considers Monday next as a holiday will, as the Act says, " observe it in all respects as a Sunday." If Anzac Day is thus to lose its real significance, one cannot help thinking that the sooner it is removed from the Statute Book as a statutory holiday, the better, leaving it to the authorities and churches to provide such commemoration as they deem fit, and to the individual to observe such commemoration according to his views on the matter.— I am, etc., A. M. GOULDING.
