FIRST ANNUAL. BANQUET. '• The PApakura Chamber pf. Commerce held its first annual banquet 'on Wednesday evening. ' There -Was an' attendance of nearly . 100.. Mr. ■. Chas. , Garlick (president) presided. The Hon. .1. A.. Young, Minister of Health, represented the Government, and representatives We're also'present from the Auckland. Hamilton and Pukekohe chambers. Mr. A. G. Lunn. ex-president of the Auckland, chamber, in proposing the toast of commercial interests, said he had to congratulate the chamber on having a membership of 60. Auckland, in comparison oufclrt to hatve a membership of something like GOOO. He-hojied the wonderful result would be maintained, and they could consider that they had put themselves on the commercial map'-of New Zealand. The speaker briefly referred to the Rotary spirit, which, he said, was fast becoming rhe spirit of the day. If this spirit operated in the Papakura' chamber, it could rest assured it would be one of the best cham•ber.s in the country. . . ,Mr. J. B. Groves, vice-president of the Auckland chamber, also supported Mr. Dunn's remarks, and.stressed the fact that Papakura needed better communication with Auckland, and advised bringing concrete methods forward and so assure the. support of Auckland. .. , . Mr. Pattle, president of the Pukekohe chamber, in responding to the toast, expressed- the hope that the chamber, would be the means of drawing, the people closer together, 'and strongly advised the chamber to get the farmers to join up. Mr. J. H. Hammond proposed the toast of the Government and eulogised the services of the Hon. J.A. Young, ' The Hon. J. A. Young congratulated Pa-pakura on.having such a live chamber of commerce. Dealing with the public health, he said It was- much better to spetfd money on preventing disease than curing it. The Minister strongly supported dairy control, and advised his audience to back 'it up in the interest of the farmer and country. He also dealt with taxation and endeavoured to - show why the. farmer's taxation should, be reduced, as he had not the same chance of passing it on-to -the Community as the merchant, the farmer depending on a London price, pure and simple.'
