N.Z. BUTTER AT HOME.

REGULATION OF SUPPLIES. X v LONDON, April 22. The London representatives of the New Zealand Dairy Board repudiate statements emanating from New Zealand to the effect that the compulsory marketing scheme which is to begin on August 1 will mean a daily fixing of the selling, price of butter and extracting the last penrty from the consumer. ' The board's view is that such a policy would defeat the purpose of its existence t -which is to encourage tbe consumption of Dominion products, stabilise prices, ensure more satisfactory returns and stimulate production. The success of that, policy, would be impossible if the board antagonised tbe consumers in the manner suggested. The purpose of the board is to enable New Zealand farmers to meet world competition in England. - In the past tliey have' been at the mercy of speculators "who took advantage of irregular shipments and alternating gluts and shortages to manipulate prices, . frequently- driving consumers to buy margarine. The board's aim is to -check that by regulating supplies. The majority of British importers of New Zealand produce were not con-' suited regarding the advisability of establishing control in the interests of the producers,-biit they, assented to the request of the Board of Control to provide finance and to co-operate. In the event of tbe establishment of control they agreed to adopt a neutral attitude regarding its establishment.— (A. and N.Z.) ' '"' ,
