MT. ROSKILL ROADS.
THE IOAN PROPOSALS. 'MORE PERMANENT MATERIAL." In connection with the loan proposals which will be placed before the ratepayers of tlie Mount Roskill Road Board district to-morrow, the chairman of the Mount Roskill Road Board, Mr. G. E. Tansley, stated to-day -that there had been dissatisfaction in the past with the main roads of the district, and it was now felt that the roads should be put down in more permanent material so as to obviate the present heavy cost of maintenance. The chairman went on to say that there would be three distinct issues. The main proposal was to provide for concrete kerbing and channelling, and for footpaths of Mount Albert Road from Crown Street at the Royal Oak to a point past May Road. It was similarly proposed .to deal with portions of Three Kings Road, Dominion Road, Hillsboro' Road, Albert Road, May Road, likewise a number of subsidiary roads. The whole proposal involved £125,950. The second proposal, embracing £81,925, provided for the laying down of the three main roads within the district in concrete, inclusive of coating the Pah Road in bitumen and the purchase of a spraying plant. The third proposal, involving £79,925, was for putting the three main roads down in concrete only. - In regard to the. financial aspect the, chairman said that if the major proposal were carried it would mean the striking of a rate of one penny and threesixteenths. If either- of the smaller proposals were carried it would necessitate a-rate of three farthings in the £. It was considered that it would not be necessary to collect any rate, owing to the large annual increase in the capital value of the district.
In conclusion the chairman stressed the point that • owing to the great increase of motor traffic scoria roads were no longer satisfactory, and it was most necessary to make roads of more permanent material.
