OTAHUHU BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho Otahuhu Borough Council met last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. R, BTodd) and Councillors C. Clements, Civil, Whyte, Petrle, Hall and Whlteley. Road, —A complaint re the dapgerot-s condition of Fairburn Road and the heed for footpaths was referred to the Works Committee. Street Lighting,—A letter was received from the Electric Power Board stating that a commencement had been made with street; lighting, instructions being to place lights 15 feet from road level. The' letter stated that 18 feet should be the minimum and 25 feet would give better results. The chairman of the Works Committee said no such Instructions were given, the foreman trusting to the board's experience In the matter. So far 38 lights had been installed, some at 18 arid sonic at 25 feist. Heavy Traffic License.—ln reply to the Auckland City Town Clerk.lt was resolved that the city be the distributing body for Otahuhu heavy traffic licenses on the basis of 50 per cent ratable capital value and 50 per cent population. Monument Reserve. — A .sketch plan for beautifying the Nixon Monument reserve was presented, showing a rock garden with pipe fencing to prevent cattla straying on. to the area. Entrances have been provided for in suitable positions. The balance of area is to be planted with shrubs, and seats ' provided where required. ' • ''. ' War Memorial: —A plan of the proposed war memorial, which is being presented to the borough by an anonymous donor, was before the council. The donor wished, Cr. Clements to lay the foundation stone, and that the structure be completed in time to be unveiled by' Anzac Day, 1827. It is anticipated that the work of erection will occupy six months. Engineer's Report.—The borough engineer reported that the rough condition o£ path south of Niger Street was due to damage by cattle. The tarring of shoulders had been completed from Portage Road to : Alexandra Street- At the junction of Fan- , mure Road and Great South Road, where • concrete had been laid in a defective man*" : ncr, instructions had' been given to the con- ' (tractors to reinstate in a<manner provided ' 'for in'the specification. In Walmsley Road ! metal course had been laid and rolled aloes its full length of shoulders. Footpaths had also been trimmed and scoria > blinding laid and rolled. This work had ; also been damaged by cattle, and when . tarring work was put in hand it would be necessary to completely close the road. - In Mangere Road concrete paving was completed on March 30, and will be available . for traffic from the' 2Sth Inst; * Water Supply.—The pumping engineer " reported that on' 'the ISth" and 19th the : well had fallen five inches, which necessi--1 tated sinking another' IS inchest During' f J the week 1,28-f.OOO gallons had been , pumped. The engineer stated that there was an extraordinarily heavy pull on the supply.. Moa Street. —The road foreman presented an estimate for repairing footpaths in Moa ■ Street, amounting to £103 19/10. The report was deferred until, the estimates are prepared. Building Permits.—The building inspeci tor reported that, for the .past fortnight permits for business, premises had been granted to the value of £2600, dwellings £2600. alteration* £170, total £5460. Cr. Paine was granted six months' leave of absence. , . . .
